I Didn't Know You Could Major in That! Development Studies
Development Studies examines the problems and processes of developing nations and areas around the world. In order to study the multi-faceted nature of these issues, the major draws from many different departments, including political science, economics, sociology, psychology, anthropology, geography, and history. It is an interdisciplinary major, but students are also required to take core classes in the department. For more information, go here: http://iastp.berkeley.edu/ProgramProfile.asp?code=DS

Being the bright and brilliant students that you are, professors seek out your help every semester on their own research. Within the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP), professors from many different disciplines display what specific aspects of their fields they are studying and students apply for apprentice positions. Not only do you get to explore your unique interests, but you also have the opportunity to get to know faculty better. For more information, visit this website: http://research.berkeley.edu/urap/
Cal Fun Fact of the Week
The Campanile was originally conceived to include two-bedroom student apartments on each floor, but alas it was not meant to be. The original blueprint drawings are on the ground floor. And bonus fun fact: You can go to the top of the Campanile for free with your Cal ID!

Phase II has just started and if you are still in a doozy about what classes to take, consider this not so-hidden gem: L&S Discovery courses. These classes are taught by professors who are renowned for their teaching styles and are designed for students of all majors and interests. And the best part? Each class fulfills a breadth requirement! I'm not gonna lie. If you go your whole Berkeley career without taking a Discovery Course, you're missing out!
I Didn't Know You Could Major In That! American Studies Edition
If you are interested in American history, literature, economics, media studies, ethnic studies, material culture, sociology, architecture, and urban studies, then American Studies may just be calling your name. As one of our interdisciplinary majors, this field allows students to take a variety of classes in many different departments. The coolest part though? This major calls on students to craft their own area of concentration. Some of the more popular ones include, but are not limited to: The American Family, American Popular Culture, American Public Policy, Education in America, and Structure and Culture in Urban America. For more information, check out the website: http://ls.berkeley.edu/ugis/as/.

Every semester, L&S offers Berkeley freshman and sophomores the opportunity to interact in a small setting with celebrated faculty and staff. These Freshman and Sophomore seminars are the perfect way to simultaneously explore an area of interest and to get to know a professor really well. Here's another hint: look for the seminars with the picture of the bread loaf next to them. These seminars indicate the class is part of the "Food for Thought" series, which allow students to eat lunch or dinner with the faculty who teach those classes every week. Cal Fun Fact of the Week
Three entries in the periodic table were given names related to the Berkeley campus: Lawrencium, berkelium, and californium. All three were discovered by Berkeley researchers. As for the university across the Bay? They do not have any elements under their belt. Just sayin'.
