If you're worried about schedule planning or what classes you should take next fall, there are plenty of resources for you. First, if you are declared, you should see your major advisers who can help you choose courses, and if you need an adviser code, they can give it to you as well. Second, there are professional academic advisers for those who have or haven't declared to help schedule which courses you might want to take. Come to 113 Campbell Hall for a drop-in appointment or schedule an appointment with an L&S Adviser. You can contact L&S Advisers at 510-642-1483. Also, there are peer advisers at the Blue Carts in front of Sproul Hall or Moffitt Library or at the Dining Halls to help map out your schedules and give some tips for which classes would be best! Lastly, the Career Center can help advise pre-professional students such as pre-med, pre-health, or pre-law to prepare you for applying to graduate schools!

Feel free to use these resources and have fun planning your schedule!

As you may know, the deadline to add/drop classes and changing the grading option from P/NP to letter grade has already passed. In the case that you missed the deadline, here are a couple of options:

If there were some extenuating circumstances that prevented you from changing your class schedule before the deadline, then you can file the Exceptional Change to Class Schedule Petition, available in our office at 113 Campbell and online. Filling out this petition does not guarantee that any schedule changes will be made. You should expect during the decision process that you will have to continue in the class you want to drop, for instance. In your personal statement, be sure to explain clearly your reasons for needing to change your schedule, what had prevented you from making the change(s) before the deadline, and any other relevant information you deem important. If you have any questions about filling out the petition, please stop by at our office for assistance.

Changing a letter graded class to P/NP, which you can still do through Tele-bears until Friday, April 4th. For example, if you can handle taking that extra class and don’t need the letter grade to fulfill any type of requirement, consider taking the class P/NP as to not jeopardize performance in your other courses. This is also an option for those that did not get their petitions for Exceptional Change to Class Schedule approved.

Are you looking for a great job for the upcoming academic year? Consider applying to become a College of Letters and Science Peer Adviser! You learn invaluable communication skills while making new friends and receiving great pay. If interested, please go here. The application deadline is 4:00 pm on April 4th.

Hi everyone! It is hard to believe, but we are 1/3 finished with this semester, which means that midterm season is here. I hope you are all handling the stress well. This week I wanted to focus on the Student Learning Center (SLC) and tell you what services are available to you as students.

The Student Learning Center (SLC) on campus is a great place to get some help in subjects that you find difficult. They offer adjunct courses, study groups, and exam reviews for a variety of subjects, especially math and science.

Adjunct courses (1-2 units, P/NP basis) are linked to lower division courses, i.e. Stats 2, and they’re only open to students that are actually enrolled in the corresponding courses. Adjunct instructors review lecture material and help students develop test-taking and study strategies.

Appointment, drop-in, and individual tutoring are all available to students. Appointment tutoring is specifically for writing. Individual tutoring allows students to meet with tutors one-on-one to get additional help by discussing course material.

Additional SLC services include: study strategies classes, study groups, and exam reviews/mock exams.

Check out slc.berkeley.edu for in-depth information on the great resources they have to offer.

Here are some important upcoming events/deadlines:

College of Letters & Science (ls-advise.berkeley.edu)
-October 19th- deadline to withdraw without semester out rule
-November 2nd- change letter grade option to P/NP option

Career Center (career.berkeley.edu)
-Graduate School Fair- October 10th-11th
-International Affairs Graduate School Fair- October 24th
-Early Bird Internship Fair- October 31st
-Civil & Environmental Engineering Career Fair- November 7th

Study Abroad
Check out http://eap.ucop.edu/eap/appdeadlines.shtm for deadlines for various study abroad programs.

Take care! Good luck studying!!!

Welcome back to Cal! Hopefully you all had a great summer and are getting back in school mode.

For those of you that have not finalized your schedules, please be aware that Friday, September 28th is the last day to drop or add classes and change the grading option from letter grade to P/NP via Telebears. As a precaution, I would suggest making any of these changes at least a couple of days before the deadline should any technical problems arise that Friday.

Even if your schedule is finalized, it is advisable that you double-check on Telebears before that add/drop deadline just to ensure that any unwanted waitlisted and/or enrolled classes are dropped. If you fail to drop unwanted classes, you will end up with a failing grade, so be sure to check!

If you are still looking for classes to add, consider the following options:

-Enrolling in a 1-2 unit Decal course to fill your schedule. Decal (Democratic Education at Cal) classes are facilitated by students that teach a wide range of topics, from introduction to stocks to the Simpsons. Check out www.decal.org for the complete list of courses.

-Enrolling in Edu 97/197 classes, which are usually 1-2 units as well. You can look through http://gse.berkeley.edu/research/eco/ap/ed97/all_sections.html for a list of these courses. You can receive credit for volunteering/tutoring or taking a study strategies course through the Student Learning Center (SLC).

-Check out http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/lfac for open classes in various departments in the College of L&S.

Remember that as a College of L&S student, you must maintain full time status, which is 13 units. Be sure that you have at least that amount by September 28th, and if you are having trouble come in and see us in 113 Campbell Hall.

Hope your classes are going well and have a great semester!

We are sad to say, but this is our last entry of the year! Summer is nearly here, and College Updates is taking a break until the Fall semester. We wanted to leave you with some things that we've learned during our year here as peer advisers.

1. To avoid long and frustrating lines, come to drop-in hours as early as you can. The office opens at 9 am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and at 10 am on Wednesday. In the afternoon, student traffic is unpredictable and waiting time can get to be over an hour. In the mornings, there are fewer people, and advisers will see you sooner.

2. If you are graduating or writing an honors thesis, you do not need to take 13 units. All you need to do is come in to 113 Campbell Hall at the beginning of the semester, and you will be approved to take a reduced course load.

3. Make photocopies of forms and petitions that you turn in to the L&S office. In the unfortunate case that your petition or form gets lost (since the office serves over 18,000 students), if you have another copy, you will be able to take care of things more efficiently.

4. The L&S website has a lot of information. Instead of trying to call in or waiting in line at the front desk with questions, you may be able to find the answers online. The website also has a list of all the courses that satisfy breadth requirements in a given semester, as well as many downloadable forms and petitions. Visit http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/ and explore!

5. If you have questions or are dealing with many issues, please do not hesitate to come see an adviser. You may also benefit from asking the peer advisers at the blue carts, since they have a student perspective to offer. We are located outside of Moffitt Library and on Sproul Plaza every day.

6. Most importantly, remember to keep things in perspective and try not to get stressed out. Berkeley is a huge school with many great opportunities, but it can also get overwhelming. Try to stay open-minded to all of your experiences here, and make sure to relax and have fun as well. After all, that is most important for your health and sanity!

Good luck with finals, and have a great summer!

Cheers from your Peers,
Angela and Maya.

The first step you take after graduating from college is often scary and unpredictable. However, there are things you can do to smooth this transition. Whether you are planning on graduate school, law school, medical school or getting a job, here are some suggestions for you:

Almost every graduate program requires you to submit at least three letters of recommendation from your professors. In a large school like Berkeley, this is a very intimidating process. However, even if you do not know most of your professors, you can still ask them for letters of recommendation as long as you do this early and in a polite and organized way. If you are planning on applying to schools during the Fall of your senior year, then it is recommended that you approach your professors at the end of your junior year. Go to their office hours, and explain to them why you are asking them for a letter of recommendation. Be ready to provide them with a packet of information about yourself and your goals for the future, so they are better able to write a strong letter for you. Remember, although professors are very busy, they are understanding of students' needs, and will most likely be willing to help you out.

Another bit of information: the Career Center is open during the summer. This is a great opportunity to go visit it when you are not stressed with schoolwork. You'll be able to talk to counselors, browse the career library, and look at possible career paths.

Talk to recently graduated students and ask them about what they're doing. You never know - you might learn of a possibility that you never heard of before.

Also, you might want to talk to your undergraduate major advisor. They are very familiar with your department and can give you suggestions about how to approach your next step after college.

Most importantly, remember to not get stressed out. Life is unpredictable and that's what makes it exciting. There will be many opportunities for you after graduating from Berkeley, so it's important to keep an open mind and you will find the right path for yourself.

Welcome back from Spring Break! Spring semester is starting to wrap up, and Fall 2007 semester Tele-Bears is just around the corner! We wanted to write down a few reminders so that you are not caught off guard during your appointment time.

Make sure to check BearFacts before your Tele-Bears appointment to see if you have any blocks on your registration. You must remove your block(s) before registering for classes. If you have a block, please call the L&S Office at (510) 642-1483 to find out the steps you need to take to remove it.

If you need an advisor code in order to sign up for classes and you are declared in a major, you need to go see your undergraduate major advisor to obtain the code. If you are not declared, then come to 113 Campbell Hall for your advisor code.

If you are planning on graduating in Fall 2007, make sure to add yourself to the degree list via Tele-Bears.

Remember, you will be able to add or drop classes through Tele-Bears until the end of the 5th week of the semester. So don't be afraid to try out new classes and "shop around" because you will be able to adjust your schedule in that period of time.

Once you've had your Phase I Tele-Bears appointment, you will be able to log in to Tele-Bears during open hours throughout Phase I. Open hours are from 7 am to 8 am and 7 pm to 12 midnight, Monday through Friday, and 12 noon - 12 midnight on Saturdays and Sundays. Phase I for Fall 2007 begins April 9th and ends July 17th. The same rule applies for Phase II.
